Inclusion criteria

For a repository to be listed in OpenDOAR it must align with our inclusion criteria:

Open Access Content Requirements:

  • Free Access: All materials must be accessible without payment to the user.
  • No Barriers: Users should not need to register or log in to access the content.
  • Full Content: The complete, unabridged version of the material must be available, not limited to abstracts, previews, or metadata records.
  • Repositories may include some restricted content (e.g. embargoed materials or metadata-only entries). However, the site must include a minimum of five scholarly materials which would help demonstrate the repository's commitment to providing valuable academic content.

Accessibility:

  • The site must be reliably accessible to users worldwide.

Content Types:

The site should feature downloadable and reusable academic outputs or resources, including:

  • Journal articles, theses, dissertations, reports, books or book chapters, conference proceedings, and working papers.
  • Reusable academic resources such as archival material, datasets, software, images, videos, or educational materials with sufficient metadata for reuse.

Exclusions:

  • Must not be an electronic journal or portal containing an entity's portfolio of journals.
  • Must not be aggregators that solely link to open-access content on external sites.
  • Must not be a library catalogue or collection offering only locally accessible e-books.

If you have any questions about these criteria, please contact help@jisc.ac.uk.
